Vietnamese Payment Card Market Set to Double by 2013

Vietnamese payment card market is relatively small but one of the fastest moving markets in the world. It has grown nearly three-fold over the last two years ending August 2009. Debit cards dominate the market whereas credit cards are relatively new in the market and account just for 2% of the total market for payment cards in the country.Therefore, the market for credit cards remains largely untapped and full of opportunities.

Firm to Manufacture ATM Cards in Rwanda

SIMTEL has hinted it is in the final stages of a project to produce Visa chip cards in Rwanda. East African Business Week quoted SIMTEL chief executive officer, Sigrid Bruch, saying the company is currently "in talks with banks". According to the newspaper, SIMTEL is a consortium owned by both the private sector and government. The company is operating Rwanda's national payment system which helps inter-bank automatic teller machine (ATM) services connectivity.

My post on 'should we have chip only payment cards?' gave rise to some discussion and debate, and many thanks to all those concerned for their views and comments. The related website poll conducted by the European ATM Security Team (EAST) indicated that 60% of respondents felt that European EMV cards should not hold sensitive cardholder data as standard in a magnetic stripe, although feedback was received highlighting issues with removing the stripe.
